Despite the bad economy a couple of new casinos have joined the local scene so I decided to pick my personal favorites based simply on location... North, South, East, and West.
- Santa Fe Station Casino (North) - Way out in the northwest part of the Vegas Valley you will find a big concrete block called Santa Fe Station Casino. In recent years Santa Fe, part of Station Casinos, seems to have improved in many areas. For example their buffet rivals many of that on The Strip and their slot promotions have been bringing in the locals despite the slow economy. Not the cleanest casino but pretty damn good job anyways. Add a few cool bars and a theatre and you got yourself some cool entertainment for the crazy people in the northside. Aliante Station Casino came a close second but its way out north next to some vacant homes and a sandy mountain. Nice place but too far even for locals.
- Green Valley Ranch (South) - About 20 minutes away from The Strip is a magical community called Henderson and here you will find a nice little oasis called Green Valley Ranch Resort and Casino. A member of Station Casinos, it caters exclusively to locals but there is a good amount of tourists lurking around. Their slot promotions are good but some machines don’t pay all that well. Locals love those damn crab legs in the buffet and the young crowd love to get kinky in The Drop Bar. Two new casinos opened up near GVR in recent years, The M Resort and Southpoint. The M Resort is way down south, its posh, it glitters, and it feels upscale… yet it has too much of “The Strip” feeling for me and I didn’t like it. Southpoint is too bright and has too many empty spaces but it feels clean.
- Eastside Cannery (East) - First off I am not a big fan when it comes to this side of town and it was hard to choose a casino that felt unique to me. Many others would say Sams Town or Boulder Station Casino are better but they have not aged well. About 20 minutes east of The Strip stands a colorful building (at night at least) on Boulder Highway. Inside is not as colorful but I guess the theme is a 60’s retro feeling by looking at the paintings and drawings on the wall. You see all kinds of people in there and it has a clean feeling while you walk around. Its not a big casino but it offers a laid back atmosphere for many locals. Casino MonteLago came second only because its too damn far and it sits in a ghostown called Lake Las Vegas. Other than that its a charming little casino.
- Red Rock Resort and Casino (West) - This was a tough choice but only one casino in the westside of town deserves a lot of recognition. Red Rock Resort and Casino, yea another Station Casino, raises the bar when it comes to local casinos. Due to the economic times we are in as I write this, its a shame to see this place not packed with people. Beautiful reds and browns splash all over the casino and their sparkling chandaliers kick ass. A couple of night clubs, bars, bowling alley, and a theatre keep the young crowd busy and their buffet is not bad. Its strange that even under the same company, Station Casino buffets are a little different from one another. This place felt really clean and fresh when I walked around. The only big problem I have with Red Rock is getting there… I just can’t be driving across town for 25 minutes. From The Strip if you take the road it will take longer than the freeway so I think your better off renting a car or get ready for an expensive taxi ride.
