Biggest lies about Vegas

List Author: roadwarrior17
Description: Here is a list of some of the biggest lies about the wonderful city of vegas
  • You have to go on a tour of the Hoover Dam - Now, if you really need to hit the dam, which is a highly questionable activity, please do not do a tour. As much as a marvel the Dam is, the fasination will wear off in minutes and you will be itching to leave boulder city and head back to the city. If you go, go own your own.
  • So many people get lucky at the high end clubs - Let’s see, you may get lucky, but it is going to cost you dearly. I love hearing people talking about how they were at LIGHT (Bellagio) and they spent $600 on a drinks on these girls and they came home solo. The higher end the club, the more of a hustle it is…
  • There is nothing downtown, stay on the strip - Not true, although different than the glitz of the strip, there are a few great restos, most notably Hugos Cellar (4 Queens) and Binions Steakhouse. Gaming is great for low rollers with low negtive EV blackjack. Just stay between the Plaza and Jillians, beyond those areas are not the safest areas in the city…
  • You do not need a car in vegas - Maybe not your first time but if you constantly stay on the strip, you are missing out on so much. A car is about average to rent a Vegas (maybe a little higher) but gives you ultimate freedom. You avoid lines, can come and go as you please, and avoid cab/monorail fees. If you are going to be planted on the strip, bag the car. But if you want to check out some of the great places off the strip like The Palms, Green Valley and Lake Las Vegas, a car is imperative.

It’s okay to bring the kids – While the “Vegas as Family Vacation Destination” idea is wearing off (finally, thank God), I still see a lot of kids (screaming in restaurants, bored-as-shit waiting for Mom to finish playing Wheel-of-Fortune, running around by the pool when I’m nursing a hangover, etc). Now, I like children as much ast the next guy, but do me a favor – next time, drop the rugrats off with Grandma.

How about the idea behind comps? The casinos, travel shows, and media make nickel slot players think limos and penthouses are just a slot club card away.

The legality of prostitution. Although sold in the form of “private entertainment to your room” by porn slappers all over the Strip, prostitution is illegal in Clark County and Las Vegas. The misconception comes from the fact that it is legal several miles away in Pahrump and some smaller cities in the surrounding area.

Vegas is full of glamorous people – People who only see Vegas on TV think it’s populated with high priced hookers, strippers, high-rollers, and attractive Crime Scene Investigators. Aside from the last example, they’re all represented in Vegas, but there are 1,000 little old ladies playing slots and keno to every 1 “glamorous” person. I make sure to emphasize this fact to my girlfriend every time I go without her.

There is still a strong perception that Vegas casinos are under the influence of the Mob. I think that the city likes to help perpetuate this myth to a certain degree, as it adds to the whole “Sin City” mystique.

You can easily rent a small car in Vegas for $15-20 a day via Hotwire/Priceline (barring times when conventions suck up the cars, which is a bad time for leisure travel anyway)- which is close to what your cab ride to the airport or from the airport will be, depending, so depending on how much you are going to spend time offstrip, it might be CHEAPER to rent than drive.
