Most Overrated

List Author: Hunter
Description: Some things just don't deserve the praise.
  • New York New York - People love this place but honestly, it’s not that great. The exterior looks cool and that’s about it. The rooms are small (realistic) and the restaurants are nothing to write home about.
  • The Venetian - One of the biggest ‘fakers’ in Las Vegas, The Venetian claims to be good and in fact, is not.
  • Luxor - This place is a tragedy. The pyramid looks fantastic on the outside but once you go in you are quickly looking for an exit. Maybe MGM MIRAGE can inject some capital.
  • The Palms - It’s on every ‘hot Vegas’ type show on the Travel Channel but if you’ve spent any time there you realize that it’s all show and no go. Hopefully the new Fantasy Tower will be a step up.
  • Las Vegas Advisor - How the hell did Anthony Curtis become the go-to Vegas ‘expert’ for the Discovery Channel? I don’t think he knows jack about the new Vegas and is probably the most boring dude ever to party with.
  • The Beach (Off-Strip Bar) - I keep hearing how great this place is but honestly it’s a meat market. It’s more like a bar in Cancun on Sprint Break than a cool Vegas hangout. If you’re looking for a great bar, check out any number of nightclubs or lounges. This place is gross.

I completely agree with this list. Along next to The Palms, I’d add Hard Rock. Other than Body English, that place feels like a dive. I wish people my age had higher standards…

I’m relieved to know I’m not the only one who believes The Palms is overrated. Everything from the parking structure to the casino floor is drab and uninteresting. Green Valley Ranch still sets the standard for locals/semi-locals resorts (at least until Red Rock opens in April).

I’ve stayed at The Venetian once. It is very poorly constructed and once you get beyond the facade, it’s cheap; almost like a back lot set in Hollywood. However, it does have some excellent restaurants and is an ideal convention hotel. It holds the Grand Prize for the absolutely worst parking garage in Las Vegas.

I’d add Mandalay Bay to the list of overrated. Like The Venetian, it has some good restaurants and expansive convention space, but it has never had the quality “look or feel” of Bellagio or The Mirage. The casino floor is dismal. I give it two years until MGM totally renovates the property.

Palms is a shopping mall with slot machines. Nuff said. Hunter, you got a beef with A-Curt?

    I think you inspired it:

“ah, Anthony Curtis may be the Las Vegas Advisor, but he probably wouldn’t know a blowjob if it sucked the end of his cock right off. He may be able to sell you some coupons for a handjob from a hooker in the shadows of the Eiffel Tower, but seriously folks… his schtick is for grannies, not lean mean sex machines like you and your Meatly Crue.”

    Hilarious!

Among other annoying Vegas TV personalities, the “Queen of Comps” herself, Jean Scott and her comping methods are very overrated. After reading her “Frugal Gambler” I came away with the notion that if she ever stayed anywhere nicer than the Stardust, she’d realize she’s been wasting her time chasing all those comps.

And what is up with the Palms and that putrid green color on the building and limos? I’ve never seen anything so ugly in all my life!

I agree with your list, although I have a sofe spot in my heart for the Luxor ( my virgin Vegas hotel ).... Venetian certainly belongs on the list, and NYNY, well I see enough NY crap from the original. Palms has alwasy been overated in my book, especially for the VP ( IMHO ).

    Leave the Luxor alone!

Hate to say it, but I’d put the Fremont Street Experience on a “Most Overrated” list. Not that the attraction itself is so bad and I thought making Fremont St into a pedestrian throughfare was a good idea…...but if you got a chance to see downtown at night before the FSE went up….what a treat!

Agree that the Palms is overrated. We hardly ever win there, the buffet sucks, and the drink service is about the worst we have ever seen. I know this place is supposed to appeal to the locals, but I don’t see the attraction at all.

I agree with most of your list (especially Anthony Curtis), but I do have one disagreement. In the past 2 1/2 years we have stayed at NY-NY about 10 times. We always find the facilities very clean, the staff extremely friendly and accommodating and we like the casino smaller and in the round. We also enjoy all of the constant entertainment in the 4 or 5 bars/clubs. They also take really good care of us and any friends we bring out. As you stated the exterior speaks for itself, but the entire interior is all NYC. But like I’ve said before, maybe you have to be from NY to really appreciate the place.

I enjoyed my stay at the luxor and thought the MB was great. The view from the figi wing is the best in vegas. raffles is the best cafe on the strip. Have stayed at Bellageo, Paris, Flamingo, Stardust. Harrahs and had a good time at every one. Maybe it is an attitude problem I have.

Palms is crap. Haven’t stayed there but casino is uncomfortable, almost a temporary feel to it and emperical observation finds rude dealers.

Almost all of the “popular culture” Vegas writers who discuss comps seem to write only for the “let me find an extra nickel in the seat cushions” set. It would be nice if someone would discuss comp strategies at higher levels. Like how to improve a room only comp at a high end hotel to a RFB, a la betting strategies, chip placement on the new high tech bet recognition tables, etc.

Would add LV Hilton’s Sportsbook to overrated list. This pains me, as it was my favorite for years, but unless they have upgraded their screens in the last year, their viewing quality was almost unwatchable

sox, Max Rubin’s book “Comp City” does just that. It actually advocates playing for comps, but the bankroll you need and ability to deal with swings takes serious discipline.

Downtown – I have stayed downtown once (at the Golden Nugget) and frankly was a little bored. Everyone was either ancient of extremely young.

I agree with one person who previoulsy left a comment… definately add The Fremont Street Experience to the “Overrated” list. I also agree that NYNY is way overrated. I don’t know, maybe it is because of the fact I only live 2 hrs away from NYC, therefore it isn’t as impressive to me? The only thing I like about NYNY is the rollercoaster. I thought that was a neat design. Otherwise I think they should keep east coast themes out of Las Vegas. One big disagreement is on the Venetian. My uncle being a high roller I have stayed at different casinos with him over the years benifiting off of his high roller status. I can tell you know one catered better or gave him a better highroller deals than the Venetian. I think most people share biased reviews on the Venetian just because it is upscale which results in narrow selective opinons. I have stayed at the Venetian 3 times and service was top notch. The high rollers pit offered free beverages and had a long snack table in the back which included gourmet cookies and chocolate covered strawberries and fresh fruit. Plus it’s 24/7 VIP lounge was very impressive with fruit, pastries, beverages, newspapers, and a nice size tv. Sorry but I have to defend the Venetian. Although I agree with most that it is VERY expensive for the average person, but one would have a big change in opinon if they were a high roller and go there. As I always say “you get what you pay for” and for what you spend there I think you get every dollars worth.

Well, I acutally LIKE the Venetian and Palms, so I guess I must be shallow. I talked about the Venetian in another thread, so I’ll level on the Palms here…

Of course, the Palms has upgraded my room twice (once I got one of the supersized NBA suites, with the shower fixture up at 7 feet…very nice, as I’m tall), and I won a decent amount of money at the craps table there…drinks are expensive when I’m buyin’, though. It’s one of the places I’ll consider if the price is right (read: on special).

To me, the problem with the Palms is not so much the physical plant, but the annoying celebrity and wannabe celebrity clientele. That said, I’ve had a great time at the Ghost Bar, and have done well at the craps tables. I have not stayed at the Palms, only because I don’t care for the location.

I would add The Foundation Room to things that were overrated… was bored out of my skull the whole time we were there.
